To celebrate the upcoming African Union Summit, a grand opening ceremony was held on May 22 local time for the new terminal of Malabo International Airport, which was constructed by WIETC, in the capital city of Equatorial Guinea. President Obiang of Equatorial Guinea and the First Lady attended the ceremony and cut the ribbon. Also presented at the ceremony were Vice President Mangue and Prime Minister Obama, government ministers, the Chinese Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea Qi Mei, the Commercial Counselor Yu Xinyu, and representatives of foreign embassies in Equatorial Guinea and African Union delegations. Gu Hongbin, General Manager of WIETC Zhengwei Equatorial Guinea and some staff representatives were invited to attend the ceremony.
In his speech, President Obiang said the new terminal of Malabo International Airport, which is put into use on the occasion of Equatorial Guinea hosting the “AU Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference” and “AU Extraordinary Conference on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Regime Change” is of great historical significance. The Equatorial Guinea government has invested a lot of resources in the project. And the President has made every effort to promote the construction of this leading modern terminal in Africa, aiming to make it a new landmark of Equatorial Guinea, from which the people can benefit. He said he was pleased with the completion of the new terminal and announced that it would be put into use on May 23, 2022.
Ambassador Qi Mei expressed congratulations to Equatorial Guinea on the opening of the new terminal. She said the project is important for Equatorial Guinea to promote economic diversification and regional & sub-regional connectivity and is of positive significance to improving the well-being of Equatorial Guinean people. China is ready to continuously support the Chinese enterprises to give play to their advantages and contribute to the construction of Equatorial Guinea under the framework of the Global Development Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, President Obiang visited the functional zones in the airport and expressed great satisfaction with the construction quality and modernization of the airport as well as his gratitude for the efforts of all parties involved in the construction. The ambassadors also expressed their congratulations to the president of Equatorial Guinea on having such an advanced airport.
The opening ceremony of the new terminal of Malabo International Airport again revealed the Company’s strength in international airport construction. The Company will take this opportunity to make progress and build more modern international airports for African countries.
The new terminal of Malabo International Airport is the third modern international airport contracted by WIETC following the Maya-Maya International Airport in the capital of the Republic of the Congo and Lomé International Airport in the capital of Togo. The total construction area of the project is 45,581m2, with 2 floors above ground and a partial mezzanine floor and a building height of 27.75 meters. It is equipped with building automation, arrival and departure information control, security inspection, baggage consignment and other systems, as well as waiting lounges, corridors, escalators, parking buildings, power stations, viaducts and other facilities, which can provide takeoff and landing support for all types of civil aircraft in the world.
